February Speaker: Jana Harp Dean

Please join us at March’s Trinity Focus Luncheon as we welcome back Jana Harp Dean, Founder and Director of OneMaker, a 501c3 organization that helps poor women around the world by establishing business ventures to train and employ them.

Jana will be speaking about the “Strangers Among Us.” She has had the joy of working with refugees, Burmese and Afghan, right here in Columbia over the last months, teaching them jewelry making skills or English, and running them to the grocery store or the thrift store or the park. Jana has also been able to enjoy sipping tea with them over long, delightful, if stilted, conversations in her intermediate-level Dari (an Afghan language) and their (sometimes) fledgling English. It is truly a joy to Jana!

South Carolina receives 150 refugees every year from Iraq, Burma, Eritrea, Afghanistan, and other hot spots around the world. Refugees flee their home countries because of war or because they are persecuted for their political views, religion, nationality, or because of their membership in a particular ethnic or social group. The stranger, the orphan, and the widow have a special place in God’s heart and we have a unique opportunity right here in our backyard to love people who have suffered injustice more than most of us can even dare to imagine.
